The Bare Facts about Bear Facts.
Remember that bears are shy creatures and will usually try to avoid people... but if you happen to see a bear, there are things you can do to try to avoid an incident.
- Never approach a bear. If you spot one, slowly back away from it, while keeping an eye on it, hopefully it will go away.
- Go inside a car or building, if one is nearby.
- Keep your dogs away from bears, take them inside with you.
If you feel threatened by a bear and you can't back away slowly. Stay in a group. Leave room for the bear to run away. Make yourselves seem as big and loud and aggressive as possible. If you have a horn or whistle, use it. If you have pepper spray, you might have to use that, too. Remember, you may have to actually punch, throw rocks or physically fight a bear, never run and don't play dead!
Statistically speaking, it's not likely you will get attacked by a bear, for every death caused by a bear, there are 180 caused by bees or hornets, 25 by snakes, 17 by spiders, 67 by dogs, 150 by tornadoes, 375 by lightning and about 90,000 homicides.
Prevent bears from being interested in you, your car, cottage or campsite by keeping food and garbage well away from them. Don't feed pets outdoors, be cautious with hummingbird and suet-style feeders. Keep your barbeque grill cleaned.
