In the Bancroft/Madawaska Areas, there are many four-season, multi-use trail systems. One of the best known, the "Hastings Heritage Trail", follows the old railway line that linked Hastings County. Vital to the early economic development of the area, the railway carried ore, timber and farm produce, as well as the mail and passengers, of course! Now the tracks have been removed providing a recreational corridor that stretches from Glen Ross to Lake St. Peter. Connecting with over 2,000 kilometers of groomed trails, the area provides fun and adventure for all sorts of recreational uses including Horseback riding, ATVing, Snowmobiling, Hiking, Cycling and Dog Sledding.
There are many places to cross-country ski. A favourite place is Silent Lake Park. This Provincial Park has 4 trails totaling about 45km of groomed trails. Downhill enthusiasts can find hills ready at Mount Madawaska (north of Combermere), Calabogie (to the east) and Haliburton (to the west). For something a little different, visit the natural luge hill- located just at the north-east town limits.
